  • Male: E / Los Alcornocales, 17.03.2012

    In southwestern Andalusia these animals can often be identified by their green backs and grey heads. With regard to the distribution of this species see map at Podarcis hispanicus. The range of this species overlaps with Podarcis carbonelli in western Andalucia. The latter one has green flanks (instead of green backs). In the north of its range, Podarcis vaucheri is replaced by Podarcis virescens which has, in contrast to Podarcis vaucheri a yellow underside of the tail. In the Sierra Nevada, Podarcis vaucheri co-occurs with Podarcis liolepis (see below).

  • Male: E / Los Alcornocales, 17.03.2012

  • Female: E / Los Alcornocales, 17.03.2012 – most females are less colourful as the specimen shown here but rather uniform brownish.

    "South-Central-Lineage":

  • „South Central Lineage“, Male: E / Sierra de Magina, 31.10.2017

    Populations in south-eastern Andalusia genetically belong to the so called "South-Central-Lineage" although they also should be referred to Podarcis vaucheri. They have characteristic dark flanks and light back colouration. However, based on optical characters only, it can be tricky to distinguish between these animals and Podarcis virescens or Podarcis liolepis. Podarcis vaucheri usually has no vertebral line while this frequently occurs in Podarcis liolepis.
