The distribution of Podarcis tauricus ranges from Hungaria over Romania, Bulgaria and Eastern Greece to the Black Sea coast in the east towards Crimea. Podarcis tauricus lives in well-vegetated habitats - frequently meadows - and climbs less than other Wall Lizards. The former subspecies ionicus is meanwhile recognized as a separate species (see species page of Podarcis ionicus). Geographically, the Pindos mountain range seems to be a natural barrier between the two species.

Within its distribution range, Podarcis tauricus could be confused with Podarcis erhardii riveti or possibly Podarcis muralis. Males of Podarcis erhardii riveti frequently show reddish undersides whereas Podarcis tauricus usually has whitish or yellow undersides. Furthermore, Podarcis tauricus shows bright green colors on the back in spring whereas such colors do not occur at Podarcis erhardii on the mainland. Also Podarcis muralis shows no bright green colors on the back. The closest relatives of Podarcis tauricus (besides of Podarcis ionicus) are Podarcis gaigeae and Podarcis milensis.
